Community Outreach

Through Kappa Alpha at UNR's philanthropic efforts we successfully brought together firefighters, police officers, city council members, news stations, local families, and sponsorships from local businesses to rally behind a meaningful cause. Our efforts raised $70,000 to provide two life-changing track chairs for wounded veterans through The Independence Fund.

The Independence Fund

The Independence Fund, established in 2007, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing aid to severely wounded, injured, or ill veterans and their families. By addressing critical gaps in care and resources, the fund seeks to restore independence and improve the quality of life for those who have made immense sacrifices for our nation. Through programs like all-terrain track chairs, caregiver support, and mental health initiatives, the Independence Fund continues to make a difference in the lives of veterans.

Our Future Goals

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we have raised over $70,000 to support our nation’s veterans through the Independence Fund. This year, we plan to continue our tradition of helping veterans in our community by providing life-changing track chairs and vital resources to those who have served. As a special highlight, we will be presenting a track chair during a UNR football game — a powerful moment to honor a local hero and showcase the impact of your generosity. Together, we’re making a lasting difference and showing our deepest gratitude to those who have sacrificed for our freedom.

Our events

Reno Police Department vs. Reno Fire Department Basketball Tournament

This 5v5 showdown brought together members of our local police and fire departments for competitive games, showcasing their teamwork and community spirit. This year, we’re raising the stakes by welcoming the Sheriff’s Department and Truckee Meadows Fire to join the action, making the tournament bigger and better than ever. All proceeds from the event go toward supporting the Independence Fund, so come out, and help us make a positive impact in our community!

This Event will be held again in the Spring of 2026!

Sorority Sand Volleyball Tournament

During our Philanthropy Week, we hosted a Sorority Sand Volleyball Tournament, bringing together all six campus sororities for a fun and competitive day. We transformed our basketball court with 40 tons of sand for a 1-loss elimination tournament, with each sorority entering two teams. After intense matches, Pi Beta Phi won the championship. The event fostered camaraderie and supported a greater cause, reflecting our commitment to philanthropy and community.

Track Chairs

Our philanthropy is raising money to buy a track chair for a wounded veteran through The Independence Fund. These all-terrain wheelchairs are designed to help veterans regain mobility and freedom, allowing them to navigate challenging terrains like sand, snow, and rough trails. By providing a track chair, we can help a veteran reconnect with outdoor activities, improve their mental well-being, and enhance their independence. This effort is our way of giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.
